KITTIE
Until It Ends
Artemis Records
· Watch out! This kitten has claws!
Metal fans have rarely been more divided than in the case of the enduringly cute Kittie. These femme fatales from Ontario have been presumptively cast into the bottomless pit of nu-metal from their 2000 arrival Spit. Founding members Fallon Bowman and Mercedes Lander have worked too long and too hard to have their efforts dismissed as just another ripple in the grrrl power revolution, or blip on the garage/punk radar screen. Fortunately, their latest release on the beloved Artemis label should put any fractious qualms to rest for good. Blasting forth with deadly radiance, Kittie plunges into their darkest material to date. Black-metal surges fraught with ungodly growls initiate the process with the frightening "Looks So Pretty" and the ambitiously paced "Pussy Sugar." The addition of second guitarist Lisa Marx provides a visceral impact as they scour the emotional abyss, dredging up tracks such as "Career Suicide" and "Daughters Down." Capitulating between harmonious and haggard, Kittie inevitably stumbles into the age-old leather-and-lace cliché. The fluffy thing with batwings, etc., etc. But, hey at least theyre not Evanescence!
