BEST OF CALGARY

From olive oil to waffles
Calgary Farmers Market is city’s bountiful best
Familiar only with Farmers Markets of the make it, bake it or grow it variety, I was at first more than a little stunned to come across two vendors selling olive oil at my first Calgary Farmers Market a few years back. Is this what they meant by the oil fields of Alberta? Was Tuscany not just a developer’s misnomer?

I’ve wised up some since then, and while I love the food court at the Crossroads Market, the main reason to markets is to get serious about laying in good things for the week’s cooking. So I want easy access, logical layout, variety, and knowledgeable and enthusiastic vendors. Calgary Farmers Market at Currie Barracks, run by the ABC Farmers Market Society has all that.

With over 50 vendors and the added attraction of a roof overhead, spending some time finding the best fruits and veggies is a pleasure. And don’t miss the amazing prepared foods either. Like the aged gouda from Sylvan Star. Or the Stilton, sherry, and green pepper dip at The Stock and Sauce Co. Sunworks Farm sweet sausage made with certified organic pork, dried cranberries, and ground oranges is ridiculously good. And everything from A Ladybug Belgian Specialities is fabulously tasty – all-organic, freshly made waffles, crepes, cheesecakes.
