| Videophiles looking to expand their movie collections should be aware that bargains are available everywhere: video stores, garage sales, department stores, pawnshops you name it. Keep this in mind and stay alert and youll stock your shelves with amazing stuff in no time. Having said that, there are places in Calgary that are firm favorites for this particular Video Vulture to seek the rare, collectable films I crave.
Looking for obscure VHS? Start at Flicks Video (33 Crowfoot Rise N.W.). In addition to a cool rental section, Flicks has more than an entire wall crammed with amazing rare and out-of-print tapes all on sale (previously viewed) for three bucks apiece! Customer service is superb.
DVD more your thing? Want to see some of the earlier films of Hong Kong stars like Chow Yun Fat or Michelle Yeoh? Head down to Pacific Place (999 - 36 St. N.E.) and check out Go East Video. Tables groaning with bargain-priced DVDs and VCDs are set up out front. Most have English subtitles, but check the box to be sure. Classic Shaw Brothers chopsocky rubs shoulders with recent hits like Zatoichi and Shaolin Soccer, along with a few hilariously mistranslated English titles. |
