The election is over, let’s celebrate Canada
Happy birthday Canada! With the federal election thankfully now behind us, Calgarians are ready to enjoy the rest of the summer. And what better way to usher in the warm weather than to celebrate the country’s birthday on July 1?

As usual, Prince’s Island Park is the hub of Canada Day activity. Last year, more than 70,000 people turned up to blow out the candles on Canada’s birthday cake. This year from noon until 6 p.m., the City of Calgary will once again host a party to celebrate all things Canuck. There will be three stages set up with entertainment ranging from Buddy the Clown to The Fates. Also making appearances will be representatives from Yoplait, the Roughnecks and Expo Latino. What a great country!

If you’re going to join the masses converging on the area, remember to leave Fido at home – no dogs are allowed into Prince’s Island Park on July 1. And instead of contributing to a massive traffic jam – walk, cycle, rollerblade or scooter over to celebrate Canada’s 137th birthday.

Canada Day celebrations continue at Canada Olympic Park from 7 to 11 p.m. The evening begins with a performance by the Maple Leaf Children Singers (a.k.a. Calgary Girls Choir), an introduction of Olympians and some traditional folk dancing. The festivities will be capped off by a display of fireworks at 11 p.m. Be sure to arrive early as no cars will be allowed to enter the park after 8 p.m. A free shuttle bus service will be available to COP from 5:30 to 10 p.m. operating from Brentwood LRT, Dalhousie LRT, McMahon Stadium and Mount Royal College. The shuttle service will also be available for the return trip after the fireworks.

Canada Day celebrations also take place at Bar-U Ranch, Heritage Park, Calgary Zoo and Fort Calgary.

On July 4, the celebrations continue at COP with a joint Canada Day and U.S. Independence Day brunch. Get ready to sing The Star Spangled Banner and O Canada before sitting down to a meal of flapjacks (and grits?)

Also at COP from July 2 to July 4 is the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup and Bike Calgary Festival, attracting more than 500 of the best mountain bikers from 23 countries competing in cross-country, downhill and four-cross (head-to-head) races during the holiday weekend.
