Patterson finds comedic kinship among the Irish

"I am kind of known as the above-the-belt comic," confesses Steve Patterson. "I don’t do any dirty jokes or below-the-belt things."

It’s not that blue humour is anything that particularly offends Patterson, it’s just not the domain where his comic sensibilities lie.

Patterson maintains his humour has a bit of an edge to it and his material is chosen though an unusual qualifying process. "I try to do jokes I can prove," he says. "If I say figure skating is stupid, then I prove that figure skating is stupid by the fact that the perfect score is six."

A native of Toronto, Patterson has been performing stand-up for over eight years and is currently promoting his first full-length comedy CD, Steve With a G. A veteran of over 1,500 professional stand-up gigs, Patterson not only tours extensively in North America but also makes regular stops in Ireland as well.

His father hails from the Irish city of Cork and, while Patterson himself has never lived on the Emerald Isle, a kinship with the country remains. "I go there, like, twice a year," he says. "I really feel at home in Ireland. I feel that I am amongst my own there as much as I do in Canada."

Patterson’s out-of-the-gutter style is also a good fit for Irish audiences. "Dirty comics don’t really fly over there," he says. "You can’t really fool them overseas with a funny accent or swearing just for the sake of swearing."

Closer to home, Calgarians can sample Patterson’s insightful-yet-clean comedy wares when he takes to the stage of Yuk Yuk’s for a five-night stand.
