| · In the great tradition of indie rock and roll soundtracks.
There was a time when movies had good soundtracks because they earned them, not because movie studios realized they could make huge coin selling the albums. Small films without extensive music licensing budgets would have to attract bands based on the quality of the film. Low-budget features such as Hard Core Logo and Half Cocked had stories about rock bands and, as such, easily attracted cool artists to play on the soundtrack.
The movie Goldirocks, the story of a young girl who lives out her rock and roll dreams of fronting a band, populates the screen with more than a few Canadian music icons and the soundtrack takes it to the next level. The cornerstone of both the film and the soundtrack is a cover of Teenage Heads "Lets Shake" performed by Blurtonia with a little help from Sasha Ormond, who plays the films title character. Its a shamelessly brilliant three-chord rocker that sets the tone for the rest of the album. With tracks from The Swallows, The Deadly Snakes, The Sadies and By Divine Right the soundtrack is a great Canadian indie-rock primer. Theres even a classic song from Nerdy Girl (Cecil Seaskull) and a solo number from 13 Enginess John Crichley for flashback potential. Its a great mid-fi compilation album on its own, but as a soundtrack it most certainly earns its cred.
