For a bunch of women born in the 80s, The Organ actually do a pretty good job of recreating the 80s new wave sound. The Hammond organ and dull thudding bass line bring back memories of James jackets and teased bangs. Singer Katie Sketch sounds exactly like Morrissey (before he gained all the weight and became a bitter recluse).
Grab That Gun is the debut full-length release by this saucy, well-groomed band. Geographically speaking, theres much to account for the records sullen mood. The band hails from Vancouver and I hear it rains a lot there. People on the coast like to wear FUBU jerseys and I know that would depress the hell out of me.
The track "Basement Band Song" is probably one of the best mope-fests Ive heard in a long time. The lyrics read like the dark, manic poetry you wrote at age 15 ("We should go down to the mall/ Look at people judge them all/ Judge them before they judge us and leave them feeling bad").
This album reminded me why I stopped listening to new wave in the first place. Even with all its bottled emotion, Grab That Gun is narcissistic and bland. The songs became too repetitious and by the end, the record left me feeling empty. I mean, even Lou Reed wrote about the sun every once in a while.
