OF MONTREAL

Polyvinyl Record Co.
· Sugary, been-done psych-pop.

I wish I had something to say about this album other than it’s just another Brian Wilson impression. Unfortunately, there’s not much more to it. Admittedly I’m a sucker for a good pop song and, to Of Montreal’s credit, few have succeeded in creating innovative psych-pop. There’s nothing wrong with imitating Pet Sounds (which they do – see the harmonies in the opener, "Disconnect the Dots" for evidence). The songs are layered and texturally appealing, but the sheer unoriginality of the album combined, with the lack of substance in the songs, makes this album nothing but a vapid aping of a sound that has been done and re-done countless times to much more successful ends.
