Drag City
· A memo to the folks at Drag City.

Dear Drag City,

For ages, you've been one of my favourite labels, and for ages it seemed like you could do no wrong.  Your past roster reads like a who's who of some of the greatest artistes going today – Will Oldham in all his guises, Edith Frost, Silver Jews, Stereolab, Jim O'Rourke, Pavement, and Smog, just to name a few.

But seriously dude(tte)s, between you and me, you've been slipping up a bit lately.  First there was the Suntanama, then that Azita woman with the lousy voice and Tori Amos on (more) crack tunes.  But now, what's this?  First Faun Fables gets the Drag City seal of approval (whoa – I say WHOA), and then, in hopes of redemption (on your part) I stick in this here debut from White Magic, only to find it's the same kind of hippy-dippy beaded-hair BS.

Boo on you Drag City.  Boo on you, I say.

And as for you, White Magic?  Kate Bush called – she wants her ideas (and ouija board) back.

SINCERELY YOURS 1/5

MARK HAMILTON
