Nuevo Latino
Putumayo Presents
· Ole Mole!

A soothing and versatile mix of Latin-flavoured delights from around the globe, Nuevo Latino sparkles with palpable pablano personality. In recent years, the Putumayo label has veritably flooded the North American world music market with an endless parade of ethnic compilations. Noted for their distinctively colourful folk-art album covers, these collectible anthologies are popping up everywhere, from bookstores to coffee shop countertops. Unfortunately, many of these point-of-purchase titles (i.e. Putumayo Presents: Salsa Around The World, or Zydeco, or Euro Lounge, etc., etc., etc.) turn out to be lacklustre montages, arbitrarily lumped together by genre with little regard for confluence or variety. Compare this to the globe-scouring research behind the compilations of the Six Degrees record label and you will quickly separate the trendsetters from the trendseekers. Similarly, Bravo! channel’s Bravo! Chill Brazil two-disc set is suitable only for elevator play in geriatric facilities, while the Food Network’s attempt, Mingle: Supper Club Album is so heavily over seasoned with adult contemporary hit makers that your dinner guests will be reaching for their ’arf bags long before dessert is served. Although Nuevo Latino doesn't entirely escape from the mediocrity of the Putumayo label, it does possess enough diversity to make it an interesting listening experience.
