MICHAEL GORDON
Light Is Calling
Nonesuch/WEA
· Enhanced CD includes a short film scored by Michael Gordon and directed by Bill Morrison, similar to the duo’s earlier collaboration on Decasia.

Few contemporary composers achieve the stature of rock stars, but to the list that includes Philip Glass and Steve Reich, one might consider adding the name Michael Gordon.

Gordon, another New Yorker, co-founded the Bang on a Can festival in 1987, which subsequently led to the formation of an offshoot ensemble, the Bang on a Can All Stars. Two of the All Stars – guitarist Mark Stewart and cellist Wendy Sutter – appear on Light Is Calling, which sees the composer primarily elaborating upon motifs established on Decasia. That’s not to say that Gordon’s complex polyrhythms and pulsing string arrangements aren’t as mesmerizing as ever. Just that this disc only sustains the genius of his earlier work rather than eclipsing it. Not bad for a rock star.
