DEL McCOURY
High Lonesome and Blue
Rounder
· High, lonesome, blue and near perfect.

Since his days in the ’60s as a member of the legendary Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys, Del McCoury has scored Grammy nominations, been inducted into the Grand Ol' Opry, released 15 albums and cultivated an unlikely fanbase as an opening act for artists ranging from Steve Earle to Phish. Today, his career is at its peak and the 65-year-old McCoury is credited with keeping bluegrass fresh by injecting brilliant new material.

High Lonesome and Blue is a compilation of some of his best songs while with Rounder Records and, like most Rounder "Heritage" compilations, serves as an excellent introduction to the artist. Chock full of rip-saw banjo playing (inspired by McCoury's early hero Earl Scruggs), tasteful mandolin and McCoury's plaintive voice, it's hard to believe these great, truly timeless songs come from the ’80s and ’90s and not the era of Bill Monroe himself.
