| E-recycling program
Alberta will be the first province in Canada to create an e-recycling program to prevent antiquated technology such as old computers from ending up in landfills.
Starting October 1, 2004 electronic equipment that people no longer want will be collected, reused and recycled. The government will start charging an environmental fee on new electronic products to pay for the recycling program.
The first phase of the program will be limited to televisions, computer monitors, laptops, electronic notebooks and printers, but the government is hoping to include more electronic equipment in the future.
