I have never understood tribute albums. Why would I want to listen to a bunch of my favourite songs done by someone other than the artists who made them my favourites in the first place? Its like listening to a Muzak version of a really great song, except with the occasional heartfelt and lusty "Yeaaaah" thrown in for good measure. Its tolerable but not necessarily engaging.
This "all-star tribute" album is comprised of a bunch of aging hard rock musicians who have either worked with KISS in the past or who are "some of their biggest fans." Well, Im a pretty big fan and although Im no "all-star," I firmly believe that my version of "Love Gun" would have probably kicked ass over Tommy Shaws... but I digress. Dee Snyder doing "Detroit Rock City?" Yawn. Chris Jericho singing "King Of The Night Time World?" Whatever. The only saving grace of this effort is the fact that most of the other covers included are so lame that you dont even remember the song enough to bad-mouth it afterwards. Although I have to admit, the version of "Shout it Out Loud" by Motorhead frontman Lemmy isnt half bad. In fact, its probably the best thing on the album.
The best way to pay tribute to KISS is to not perform their songs and suck. Here endeth the rant.
