CRAIG TABORN
Junk Magic
Thirsty Ear Records
· Craig Taborn is the future of jazz.

There’s a sticker on the front of Craig Taborn’s latest album that prophesizes the future of jazz can be found in Taborn’s mixture of abstract laptop electronica and free-jazz. There’s no doubt that Taborn is one of the most sought-after and well-respected jazz pianists in the free-jazz scene, but alas, most jazz listeners will be at odds with what has been dubbed the future of their genre – Junk Magic is not for the faint of heart. Taborn is joined by a trio of musicians who have a progressive vision of what jazz ought to be. Manic violist Mat Maneri, tenor sax player Aaron Stewart and David King of the Bad Plus on drums lend a hand in an expansive journey through a marriage of baffling ambient sounds and jazz. Comprised entirely of original material, Junk Magic incorporates breakbeat-influenced cut-up drum programming with Stewart’s creepy meandering solos and Maneri’s abrasive, microtonal textures. It’s a ride, but one worth taking if only to see the future.
