SKID MARKS
Brandon, Manitoba MC Pipi Skid reteams with his label partner and producer McEnroe for his latest album Funny Farm (Peanuts & Corn). Although he bears a striking lyrical similarity to other Canuck MCs (McEnroe, Buck 65) and an equally comparable eerie musical style, this former member of Farm Fresh delivers the goods.

Web-savvy hipsters who were surprised to see actress Julie Delpy (Before Sunrise) on the line up at this year’s South by Southwest festival can stop wincing. As far as making a transition from movies to music, Delpy’s self-titled album (Pias) isn’t perfect, but it’s far better than, say, Billy Bob Thornton. Although based in France, Delpy doesn’t dig into Parisian pop like you might imagine. Instead she manages to call to mind a less brutal PJ Harvey, although without Polly Jean’s power.

For those about to rock, get ready to get ready. The leather-clad bikers and buxom bikini women on the cover of The Wildhearts Will Be Destroyed (Sanctuary) offers just what you might expect. These hard rockin’ Brits have been wielding guitars for more than a decade and The Wildhearts recently toured with The Darkness.

Which is right where Young Heart Attack should be. These Texas powerhouses were cited as The Darkness’s favourite band, and their latest album Mouthful of Love (XL) is loaded with chunky riffs and shameless classic rock. Their male-female vocal trading sounds like a cross between Joan Jett and the Cult, but at times they sound like The Who and AC-DC as well. Nothing new, but if you wanna rock you probably don’t care how fresh it is.
