UNCUT
Those Who Were Hung Hang Here
Paper Bag Records
· Bringing back the teenage riot.

With their urgent guitars and driving kick-drum beats, some of the songs on Uncut’s album Those Who Were Hung Hang Here could easily be grouped in a college DJ’s set with Franz Ferdinand or fellow Torontonians controller.controller. The rest of the time the band’s hooky indie-rock guitar calls to mind the brilliant German minimalists 18th Dye. Uncut’s hooky guitar reps, fuzzy bass choruses and the occasional shameless nod to Sonic Youth update tense ’80s post-punk and the shambling sounds of mid-’90s guitar skronk by tightening the screws and making the most of simple songs. The hipper-than-thou vocal delivery somehow comes off as sexy whether the guitars are slicing through the faux disco of "Understanding the New Violence," tearing apart the D.C. swank-punk of "Intentions Change" or blitzing through the mono-chord rock of "A Summer Day." Bonus points for copious use of a shaker.
