With their urgent guitars and driving kick-drum beats, some of the songs on Uncuts album Those Who Were Hung Hang Here could easily be grouped in a college DJs set with Franz Ferdinand or fellow Torontonians controller.controller. The rest of the time the bands hooky indie-rock guitar calls to mind the brilliant German minimalists 18th Dye. Uncuts hooky guitar reps, fuzzy bass choruses and the occasional shameless nod to Sonic Youth update tense 80s post-punk and the shambling sounds of mid-90s guitar skronk by tightening the screws and making the most of simple songs. The hipper-than-thou vocal delivery somehow comes off as sexy whether the guitars are slicing through the faux disco of "Understanding the New Violence," tearing apart the D.C. swank-punk of "Intentions Change" or blitzing through the mono-chord rock of "A Summer Day." Bonus points for copious use of a shaker.
