RADIOHEAD
Com Lag
EMI Japan
· Holy import prices!

As the long-rumoured remix album in the cards since a promised full-length reworking of OK Computer by Massive Attack was shelved, Com Lag can’t help but be an astounding disappointment.

More a half-assed recap of Hail To The Thief’s b-side material than any real reconsideration of anything Radiohead’s done of late, there are a few gems left – a full band working version of "I Will" turns one of Thom Yorke’s most sombre of tunes into doo-wop, Four Tet’s brilliant recast of "Scatterbrain" into the glitch symphonics of "Skttrbrain" improves on the original and both of Yorke’s solo performances ("Gagging Order" and the live "Fog Again") prove there’s still amazing songs waiting behind the wizard’s curtain.

Granted, given how strange much of what Radiohead has done in the past few years under the guise of a rock band has been (the originals already sound like remixes), it would be difficult to ever properly remix them to anyone’s satisfaction. Funniest of all, though, is the opening squeal of computer noise nonsense that momentarily almost passes for a new Radiohead composition in itself. "I’m a creep/ I’m a weirdo," finally sounds like true poetry.
