HAVERGAL
Elettricita
Secretly Canadian
· Where were you guys when I was trying to get into Modest Mouse?

If I had been paying attention, I would have noticed that Havergal have been putting out seven-inch records and split-CDs since 1998. Then again, maybe architect-singer Ryan Murphy wasn’t quite ready yet for me to find him. With crystalline guitars, loping melodies and vocals that are a dead ringer for Issac Brock of Modest Mouse, Elettricita, his second sad-core full length, feels like the result of intricate fine tuning. The three years since Havergal’s debut have produced a melancholy epic worthy of all the hipster cred that being signed to Secretly Canadian records undoubtedly brings. With beautiful piano accents and hypnotic guitar loops that border on glitchy, the album works as lush background music, yet still stands up to amplified scrutiny.
