Beat legend comes calling
di Prima to be part of spoken word fest series
Yikes! Those space-and-deadline Pac-Men gobbled up any mention here of last week’s Disaster! events at Truck Gallery. But even though the opening events are over, the ongoing exhibit and the accompanying issue of dANDelion still await you downstairs at the Grain Exchange (815 First St. S.W.).

Inside the special dANDelion issue there’s a limited edition chapbook with work by Fred Wah, David Bateman, Dorothy Trujillo Lusk, Rob McLennan and others. Plus colour postcards of the art in the show. Get there before the closing gala and readings on May 22 at 7:30 p.m., and watch for details on that.

This summer, in association with the Calgary International Spoken Word Festival, a stellar trio of spoken word artists will be offering workshops in the city. Brooklyn-born beat legend Diane di Prima, who has been publishing and editing poetry since the 1950s, starts off the series of workshops from July 5 to 9. Then, from July 9 to 11, the well-known dub poet and Juno winner Lillian Allen steps in. Finally, from August 5 to 7, it’s Canadian hip-hop and spoken word artist Dwayne Morgan, the founder of Up From the Roots who won the inaugural Canadian Urban Music Award for best spoken word recording. For all the details on these workshops, contact Sheri-D Wilson at 686-4292, or sheridwilson@shaw.ca.

Larissa Lai, Satya Das, Rita Wong and Roy Miki will all read at McNally Robinson this week to celebrate the start of Asian Heritage month. Lai has published two novels, When Fox is a Thousand and Salt Fish Girl. Journalist and Alberta Human Rights Award winner Das will read from his new book The Best Country: Why Canada Will Lead the Future. Miki is the 2002 Governor General’s Award winner for poetry, for his book Surrender, and 1997 Asian Canadian Emerging Writers’ Award winner Wong published monkeypuzzle in 1998. The event is on Wednesday, May 5 at 7 p.m.

Lai also reads earlier in the week at McNally Robinson with Emily Pohl-Weary. On Monday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m., they present Girls Who Bite Back, a unique collection of short fiction, culture analysis, comics and art.

Also at McNally Robinson, Edge, the science fiction and fantasy publisher, presents a triple book launch on Friday, April 30 at 6:30 p.m. And none of the authors will be there! That’s because Edge has branched out to publish writers from places as far-flung as New Zealand, or Chicoutimi. So they’ve turned to Albertan readers to present work by Australian author K. A. Bedford, New Zealand author Till Noever and Quebec author Elisabeth Vonarburg. The readers include two Roberts, Abbott and Woodbury. And there’s music by Dr. J.

Meanwhile, at Pages, Lisa Grekul will read from Kalyna’s Song, which W.P. Kinsella recently chose for the 2003 Amazon.ca/Books in Canada First Novel Award shortlist. Grekul reads on Tuesday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m. And on Wednesday, May 5, publisher Fifth House, aptly enough, is holding a reception at the store. That’s at 7:30 p.m., too, and there will be refreshments.
