More local artists release swan-song albums
There seems to be a growing trend among bands and musicians to release a new CD just as they’re calling it quits. On Friday, April 23, Souljacker will release a seven-song farewell album at the Black Swan (it’s down on Southport Road S.W.), backed by The Firm Handshake and Hogpuncher. The CD was recorded with Casey Lewis at Echo Base Studios.

Also on the 23rd, oddball underground rapper NerdX will bid his adieus and release his latest recording at the Carpenter’s Union Hall in Kensington. He’ll be joined by Nikola Tesla, Everything Is Dead, The Silent Auction (who’ll have a new MP3 out in time for the show) and the busy folks in The Firm Handshake. Tickets for that all-ages show are eight bucks, and doors open at 5:30 p.m. for a 6 p.m. show.

April’s also turning out to be a big month for anniversaries. On the heels of the Warehouse’s two-decade celebration, the Night Gallery marks its 10th birthday on Saturday, April 24. Guests for this party include Leeroy Stagger, The Ramblin’ Ambassadors, The Neckers and Ditchrider. (I wonder if there’ll be cake…. mmm, cake….)

Musicians might want to mark Saturday, May 1 off on their calendars. That’s the day the Calgary Musicians Association presents "For the Record," a seminar on the business aspects of making a record. This all-day workshop will cover topics on royalties, copyright, funding, marketing, contracts and publishing. Scheduled speakers include entertainment lawyer Wayne Logan, Al Chapman from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Len Lytwyn, the executive director of AFM (American Federation of Musicians) Canada and local musicians-producers-entrepreneurs Tim Tamashiro and Russ Broom. The seminar will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Cantos Music Foundation (134 11th Ave S.E.). Tickets are $20 for non-CMA members, and the deadline for registration is Wednesday, April 28. For more information or to register, call 264-6610 or email info@calgarymusicians.org.
