ROKIA TRAORE – Bowmboi (Indigo)

Compared to the ’70s and ’80s, African music hasn’t been up to much for the last 15 years, so it’s good to see a new album like Bowmboi, which takes the already rich Malian tradition into exciting new territory, and has a woman taking the lead in a previously male-dominated field.

JOLIE HOLLAND – Escondida (ANTI-)

A former member of The Be Good Tanyas, Jolie Holland has a similar rambling hobo sound to Vancouver's favourite female trio. Her demo CD Catalpa took old-timey music and added a dreamy, sexy feel (if there's such a thing as a sexy hobo). Her new release (and debut studio album) promises to be even mellower, with a touch of jazz. Perfect for a hot, lazy summer day.
