THE BLITHE SONS
Arm Of The Starfish
Family Vineyard
· True story: my dripping sink fits in really well with this album.

Yes, it’s wrong to assume, but when I see there are five tracks on an album totalling 45 minutes in length, I figure I’m not gonna hear punk rock. Score one for me.

Now, I have nothing against soundscapes, but I think they should be evocative of something, but Arm Of The Starfish doesn’t evoke much for me – not even the seaside atmosphere which it’s intended to capture. Maybe it’s the lack of energy. I’ve always found large bodies of water to be pretty dynamic, but the Blithe Sons are definitely going for a calm blue ocean here. There are some interesting Sigur Ros-type moments, featuring wordless or unintelligible (at least to me) vocalizations, but they aren’t used with any consistency. It’s not bad to relax to, but I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re doing anything requiring wakefulness.

2/5
