ELF POWER
Walking With The Beggar Boys
Orange Twin Records
· Pixie’s Midnight Runners!

Elf Power presents another whimsically observant portrait of the human condition. This self-produced commune of Athens, Georgia dirt farmers may mingle ultra-smooth Urge Overkill guitar work with spacey organ effects, but they somehow still emote that low-fi Canned Heat, psychedelic-burnout folk vibe.

The two opening tracks possess singer Andy Rieger’s signature propensity for amusing rhyme and lovey-dovey vocals. Eleven silver stringed tunes recount as many sleepless nights and penniless days, illuminated by middleclass love run wild. But the album falters badly on the slippery slopes of engagement as the soybean-munching Elf Power troop fails to cultivate interest and variety in their urban garden. This sedate and soft-edged album doesn’t present a challenge to even the most mild mannered of listeners. But, by the same turn, it melts easily into any background – as culturally stimulating as a cup of vanilla yogurt. Good – just not as good as Gainsville Florida’s Causey Way.
