New and notable on DVD
What do you do when all 50 of those copies of Gothika sitting on the new-release shelf have already been snapped up? Why, rent something good, of course. Here’s the latest batch of digitized cinematic crack for your habit:

· Bed and Sofa (1927, Abram Room, Image): Risqué film from the high period of Soviet cinema tells the story of an unusual ménage-a-trois – the disc also includes the short Chess Fever.

· Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (2002, Doug Miles, Facets): This bizarre spoof parodies 1950s sci-fi B movies and the era’s alarmist anti-homosexual propaganda – at the same time!

· La Habanera (1937, Douglas Sirk, Kino): The Sirk revival continues with the release of this obscure musical made prior to the director’s emigration from Germany to the United States.

· Liliom (1934, Fritz Lang, Kino): This rare noir fantasy was made by Lang, an earlier German émigré, in France on his way to America.

· Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds: The Videos (2004, various directors, Rhino): This collection of music videos from one of the most frightening romantics in show business includes Cave’s "mofo"-filled rendition of "Stagger Lee."

· Onibaba (1964, Kaneto Shindo, Criterion Collection): Awash in demons, murder and eroticism this supernatural Japanese film is just as any good folktale should be.

· Penn & Teller: Bullshit! (Randall Moldare and Star Price, 2003, Showtime): Everybody’s favourite magicians set their sights on debunking religious leaders and other charlatans – available in censored and uncensored versions.

· Scenes from a Marriage (1973, Ingmar Bergmann, Criterion Collection): Bergmann’s five-hour opus is finally available on video in North America.

· Time Without Pity (1957, Joseph Losey, Home Vision): The acclaimed director of The Servant delivers a race-against-the-clock thriller about an alcoholic trying to exonerate his son, who has been sentenced to death.

· Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War (Rykodisc): This informative documentary reveals that the truth really does hurt.
