Sage Theatre changes hands
Sage Theatre’s founding artistic director is moving on. Rob Moffatt, who started the company six years ago, will depart at the end of June, to be replaced by Kelly Reay, currently resident stage manager for Theatre Junction.

Under Moffatt’s leadership, Sage came roaring onto the scene in 1998 with a gripping production of Judith Thompson’s Lion in the Streets, which grabbed four Betty Mitchell Awards. The company went on to stage the Canadian première of Tony Kushner’s Slavs!, and revivals of Martin Sherman’s Bent and Robert Lepage’s Polygraph, among other notable shows.

Originally based in One Yellow Rabbit’s Big Secret Theatre, Sage has been a peripatetic company for the last few years, performing at the Bridgeland community centre, Dancers’ Studio West and, this season, at the New Dance/Theatre in Inglewood. Sage will open its next production there, a new musical by Moffatt and singer-songwriter Kris Demeanor called Songs From the Burning Man, on April 8.

Reay, now in his third year with Theatre Junction, has previously worked at The Banff Centre, Edmonton’s Theatre Network and Keyano Theatre in Fort McMurray, among others. He’ll announce Sage’s 2004 - 2005 season following the closing-night performance of Burning Man on April 24.
