· The importance of being earnest. Easily Amused play Ironwood April 6

The cynic in me wants to dismiss this band as a pre-fab pop smart bomb that is just biding its time waiting for their music to be used in car commercials and TV shows. Two young, good looking singer-songwriters who craft pristine (and I mean squeaky clean) pop-rock songs. The male-female vocal partnership on the album is so good you would think it was computer engineered and the package is complete, right down to the alternate version of the single in French for eastern Canada.

In fact, if Simple Stuff wasn’t an independent release I would suspect the hands of many a record exec clapping together in anticipation. Instead, I wonder why they aren’t signed. While their brand of pop may be a little white bread for my taste (c’mon even Crowded House and Sheryl Crow have a dark side) as they grow out of the role of fresh-faced newcomers and into jaded tour-weary vets (which should be soon given how much they have toured for this record) this duo from Winnipeg will no doubt add some much needed grit to their hyper-clean sound.
