Funnyfest expands the laughs
Calgary’s Little Comedy Festival That Could just keeps gaining momentum. FunnyFest hits town a month sooner this year, running from May 1 through 15.

"We’re really excited to have FunnyFest move to May," says festival director Stu Hughes. "It’s going to launch the festival season with a bang."

Hughes is also gratified that Calgary’s premier comedy showcase has been able to expand to 15 full days of giggles and guffaws, up from 11 last year.

Leading up to the festival is the FunnyFest Talent Search at the Sheraton Eau Claire. The contest is already underway and continues every Saturday night until April 17, when the weekly comic qualifiers will compete for three available spots on the FunnyFest performance roster.

The names announced so far in the festival’s rapidly expanding lineup include Canadian comics and festival returnees Dez Reed, Big Daddy Tazz and an accomplished iron man of comedy, Ron Vaudry. Also look for Hot Nuts and Popcorn, a troupe that got its start at Calgary’s Loose Moose Theatre Company and will be returning with a new vaudeville-influenced comedy revue.
