The dogs of winter
In planning a romantic weekend out of the city recently, I was stuck with finding activities that were unique to my partner and me. Sure, we were staying at the lovely Chateau Lake Louise, but I wasn’t bringing my snowboard and my partner rolled his eyes dramatically when I suggested ice skating or an evening sleigh ride. However, he is a sucker for animals and half-day tours. I had a winner in Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours.

At snowyowltours.com you’ll find Charles and Connie Arsenault’s labour of love. The owners of Snowy Owl Tours and about 135 huskies have put together a site that not only showcases their business, but the history of dog sledding as well. In addition to providing tour options, you’ll find pages on the life of a sled dog, the history of the guides (one was a tour visitor who just had to come back and work for the company), and an Adopt a Dog section where you can reward a retired musher by giving him a spot on your couch.

Tours start at $90 per person for a two-hour journey around the Canadian Rockies to an overnight camping experience in a heated tipi for $920. There are children’s rates and warm gear rentals available, as well as adventurous options like igloo building and ice fishing if you’re looking for an even more memorable day. If you’re not into braving the wilderness, you can still spend quality time with the dogs with the two-hour kennel program ($45) offered from June through to September.
