THE ELECTED
Me First
Sub Pop
· Let's be friends and other fables for the brokenhearted.

The debut record by alt-American all-stars The Elected, is a dubious but undeniably beautiful venture into the genre of California folk-pop. Singer Blake Sennett's (Rilo Kiley) vocals range from sweet to maniacal as he’s accompanied by Mike Bloom, Orinda Fink (Azure Ray), Jason Boesel (Rilo Kiley) and Daniel Brummel (Ozma).

The album touches on the confusion of wanting to be in love, but inevitably throwing it away, as described in the song "Don't Blow It." The lyrics are skeptical and guarded, but forever hopeful ("Someone out there loves you/You know who you are/When the right time comes/You're going to break their heart"). Like riding your bike past the house of the one you love at three in the morning, Me First is way too pathetic to be menacing. "Go On," references a bitter break-up where an eternal optimist begs for one more chance, but ultimately The Elected are 80-pound weaklings who get sand kicked in their face and their girl stolen by the hunky bronzed Adonis. They're convenience-store prophets opting to hang out at the strip mall instead of the beach.
