Green party’s vision based in reality
Re: Going Green in Alberta, News, by Amy Steele, January 29 — February 4.

I take issue with professor Barry Coopers' assertion that, "(The Green Party) has no chance of electing anyone because they're based upon a moralistic fantasy about the way things ought to be, not the way they are."

In my very first political science course, politics was defined as "the art of the possible." And while that may be an overly romantic way of describing the way we govern our affairs, I believe that this definition contains a deeper truth: perhaps politics and elections ought to be a debate about what kind of world we want to create. I believe that it is possible and desirable to create a society where everyone is not only prosperous, but that our prosperity is assured through the practice of sustainability.

As for the Greens being nothing but a special interest group, consider this: since my start with the Green party, I have asked over 100 people a very simple question: "Do you believe that our society is sustainable?" In the two years I have been asking this question, not one person has responded "yes." People from all walks of life realize, at a very fundamental level, that our current prosperity is at risk. Creating a sustainable future is the only acceptable answer: a response that credits our creativity, innovation and optimism.

It is the highest tragedy that a man of such intelligence and learning is so blinded by "the way things are" that he cannot envision a brighter future.
