Scientific studies conducted on people who play a lot of Tetris have revealed that said individuals tend to dream about the video game, right down to the hypnotic background music. If this holds true, then the music of Calgary’s own post-jazz electro-fusion quartet Tetrix will certainly be furnishing the soundtrack to many a listener’s REM cycle. Their fifth release even features a nostalgic Nintendo-style video game of its own, allowing you to square off against each band member in a pixel punch-up royale! Battle bots aside, Tetrix 5 is not what you’d expect.
Smeared samples and bloated reverb float paradoxically between the lush and abrasive, the shrill and muffled and the whimsical and sombre. A synthetic swampland presided over by the drunken spectre of Jim Morrison spewing forth glorious gutters of pseudo-shamanic poetry.
