The debut album from New York punks Bayside is one of those split-decision albums. From a musical standpoint, the hegemonized emo signposts are all in place, but not in a bad way. The stuttering guitars, breakneck drumming and hooky melodies are all delivered with strength and conviction. The album feels kind of raw and doesnt suffer from slick over-production. But when Anthony Raneri takes the mic, it sounds like hes trying to be Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World. His lyrics may not be any worse than your typical wounded-teen singer-songwriter, but they are so unoriginal on the album that their immaturity shows through. Bayside may very well grow into another pop-punk institution, but right now Sirens and Condolences is a pretty average affair.
