| · Martyn Joseph plays the Ironwood Stage and Grill January 17, and the Dalhousie Community Centre January 23.
With his first studio album since 1999, Martyn Joseph has taken the early lead in the longest album title of the year sweepstakes. Despite its epic moniker, Whoever it was
is an unpretentious album of reflections on life and love.
Josephs solid guitar work and lyrical sensitivity form the foundation for thoughtful songs such as "Where The Angels Sleep" and "Every Little Sign," as well as for cheerier pieces such as "Love Is." "This Being Woman" shows Josephs skill at walking in another persons shoes, as he uses his unvarnished yet warm voice to tell the story of a solitary older woman. The lengthy finale to the title track could put many outro-happy rock bands to shame, but its gentle build augmented by bass, piano and strings makes a fitting capper to this well-crafted disc.
