Band names aren’t the be-all and end-all of a successful musical act. Even artists with bad band names have been known to make good music – take Archers of Loaf for example. However to even get a fair shake a group with a sub-par moniker has to be at least twice as good as their contemporaries. That said, Hoobastank would have to be the next freaking coming to make up for their name, and I think we all know that’s not the case.
With aimless post-grunge rock, faux anthems and stuttered picking swiped from crappy ’80s hair metal, there isn’t a lot here to keep one’s attention. Immaculately mixed by Chris Lord-Alge, every sludgy chord progression, every limp solo and every whining yawp is captured in crystal-clear high fidelity sound that reveals every limitation of the band.
On the title track, vocalist Douglas Robb sings "I’m not a perfect person, there are many things I wish I didn’t do." Yeah Doug, I can think of something I wish you didn’t do.
