Red Cross appeal

The Canadian Red Cross is continuing to ask for donations to help the victims of a catastrophic earthquake in Bam, Iran.

The earthquake, which happened December 26, killed an estimated 30,000 people and injured 50,000, leaving tens of thousands more homeless. About 60 per cent of the city’s houses and buildings were badly damaged or destroyed.

Money raised will go to help the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Iranian Red Crescent Society to provide tents, kerosene stoves, blankets, water purification tablets and other much needed survival items.

To make a financial donation you can call the Calgary Red Cross office at 541-6100 or make a donation online at www.redcross.ca. The Red Cross is not accepting donations of goods for this disaster.

Kennedy in Canmore

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be in Canmore this Sunday to speak about North American water issues as part of a fundraiser for Mountain Parks and Watershed Association.

Kennedy is president of Waterkeeper Alliance, an environmental organization that has successfully sued American governments and companies for polluting water supplies. The alliance has chapters all over the world, including a Bow Riverkeepers chapter, which was started last year. The Bow Riverkeepers chapter is an Alberta chapter focused on protecting the Bow River.

Kennedy’s last visit to Alberta landed him in a spat with provincial Environment Minister Lorne Taylor, who said it was inappropriate for Kennedy, an American, to criticize Alberta’s handling of the environment.

Journalist Andrew Nikiforuk and University of Alberta biology professor David Schindler will also speak about Alberta water issues at the fundraiser.

The event will take place at 7 p.m. on January 11 at the Canmore Collegiate High School. Tickets are $25 and are available by calling 403-762-0591.
