| · Late-night Canadian cool any time of the day.
If you either yawn or run away screaming when someone says "Canadian music" or "CBC Television," you probably havent seen the late-night arts program ZeD, which aims to demonstrate that our music (and our pronunciation of the alphabet) is the hippest thing going these days.
In collecting performances from 17 just-under-the-radar bands, the producers of ZeD: Live Off The Floor have elected to include only one group from Ontario (urban crew BrassMunk) on the whole album. The focus falls instead on northerners such as Boy, Quebecers such as Sam Roberts, coastal dwellers Buck 65 and Radiogram, and Prairie players The Weakerthans and Kris Demeanor, with a few non-Canucks (including the deeply funky Medusa and the fascinating Cinematic Orchestra) thrown in for good measure. While not all the tracks are gems, the overall impression youll get from this compilation is that the true north is strong, free and swingin.
