| · A reminder of the universality of music.
There certainly arent many boundaries on Kiran Ahluwalias new solo recording. The India-born, Toronto-raised singer has put her own music to words written by Punjabi and Urdu poets, added in some traditional South Asian folk songs, arranged the resulting works using a combination of traditional Indian and Western instruments, and created an album thats both classic and modern.
Musically, Beyond Boundaries is a multi-faceted affair, where a slow, haunting track like the nazm "Main Dhoondta Hoon (Eternal Search)" is followed by the happier Punjabi folk song "Ik Ranjha (My Longing)," with Mediterranean-tinged ghazals like "Saaqiya (Wine Bearer)" added in for good measure. As diverse as they may be, the songs are all bound together by Ahluwalias lovely soprano voice, which transcends the linguistic barriers and makes this disc a fine listening experience.
