KIRAN AHLUWALIA
Beyond Boundaries
Kiran Music
· A reminder of the universality of music.

There certainly aren’t many boundaries on Kiran Ahluwalia’s new solo recording. The India-born, Toronto-raised singer has put her own music to words written by Punjabi and Urdu poets, added in some traditional South Asian folk songs, arranged the resulting works using a combination of traditional Indian and Western instruments, and created an album that’s both classic and modern.

Musically, Beyond Boundaries is a multi-faceted affair, where a slow, haunting track like the nazm "Main Dhoondta Hoon (Eternal Search)" is followed by the happier Punjabi folk song "Ik Ranjha (My Longing)," with Mediterranean-tinged ghazals like "Saaqiya (Wine Bearer)" added in for good measure. As diverse as they may be, the songs are all bound together by Ahluwalia’s lovely soprano voice, which transcends the linguistic barriers and makes this disc a fine listening experience.
