A perfect throwback to New Yorks short-lived no-wave scene viewed through an East Coast lens, San Franciscos Erase Errata have quickly found the perfect middle ground between danceable thrash and avant noise.
Built upon the yelping call and response vocals of the miniscule Jenny Hoyston (whose occasional shrieks on saxophone should come far more often than they actually do), Erase Erratas finest skill comes in balancing angular punk screeches with titles like "A Thief Detests the Criminal, Elements of the Ruling Class" and bass-heavy punk-funk that forces you to twitch around your living room. The chorus of "Owls" ("I have night vision/ I am a bird of prey/ I am a bird of prey/ Attack/ Attack!/ Attack!") alone marks At Crystal Palace as something truly special.
While undoubtedly bowed at the altars of Sonic Youth, The Contortions, Lydia Lunch and Branca, on their second album the girls of Erase Errata sound like the founders of a movement rather than merely a batch of stubborn dyed-in-the-wool followers with nothing new to offer. Dare I say their 2003 rewrite of two decades earlier is even better this time around?
