Castro hurts Cubans
Re: Missed opportunity to learn about Cuba, by Vincent Monahan, Letter, October 30 - November 5, 2003

You may have heard that "Cuba has done a great job on education and health," but what you don't know is the reality. Cuba may have qualified medical staff, but they do not have the medicine, medical equipment or supplies to provide proper care.

Each time I travel to Cuba, I bring an extra suitcase filled with medicine and vitamins, and I am not alone in this. Yes, education is free and the population has a high literacy rate, yet the schools are filled with archaic textbooks while lacking enough learning tools, supplies, computers, and the list goes on. They are in no way on par with the western world.

Castro has deprived his people of basic necessities – they endure relentless poverty and, most importantly, their human rights and freedoms have been denied. This is not a result of the U.S. embargo, as Cuba has many trading partners, Canada included. Due to Castro’s megalomania, his delusions of the revolution and his tyranny, he has created a society of desperate people.
