CRITIC’S PICKS

COREY HARRIS – Mississippi to Mali (Rounder)

This critically acclaimed bluesman has always played around with a variety of interesting influences, which includes reggae, funk, Latin, R and B and traditional sounds from Africa. This new album was made "in the field" in both Mississippi and Mali, exploring the very heart of the blues by illuminating both African and the American roots. With this release, Harris takes the blues out of the studio and into the street, where it belongs.

MARTIN KEMP

GRANDPABOY – Dead Man Shake (Fat Possum)

Dissolving in 1990, The Replacements left a permanent bruise on the face of (what became) alternative rock. Then frontman Paul Westerberg turned into a wistful wuss. That is, until the 2002 release of Stereo and its killer bonus disc by the "band" Grandpaboy. Here's hoping Westerberg picks up where he left off.
