CRITIC’S PICKS

FEFE DOBSON – Fefe Dobson (Island Records/Def Jam)

Dubbed as the "authentic Avril," Fefe Dobson gets a shout-out because I was totally wrong about Alanis and fear that I may be out of the loop when it comes to the youth market. Dobson is edgy, fashion forward and urban, which will most certainly appeal to the underage.

KIRSTEN KOSLOSKI

THE FLAMING LIPS – Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (Warner DVD) – Ego Trippin’ at the Gates of Hell (Warner)

Enough time has passed since the release of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots that hardcore fans will gladly fork over for a new DVD version mixed in surround sound. The Ego Trippin’ at the Gates of Hell EP promises remixes, an original Christmas song and something that frontman Wayne Coyne describes as Yes meets John Coltrane.

CHRISTOPHER MARKOWSKY

IGGY POP – Skull Ring (Virgin)

Besides seven songs featuring his new band The Trolls, Skull Ring will see the ageless proto-punker reunite with Stooges Ron (guitar, bass) and Scott Asheton (drums) on four deadly tracks. It also features special appearances by Green Day, Canadian heroes Sum 41 and dirty diva Peaches.

CHRISTINE LEONARD

MOVIETONE – The Sand and the Stars (Drag City)

In the past, Movietone's minimal brilliance and ambient drone has been intoxicating, but the prospect of hearing their sound fleshed out by piano, trumpet and clarinet is bound to be stunning.

JASON LEWIS

RUSH – Rush In Rio (live)

One, it’s a triple-disc live recording (who does that?). Two, it’s fun to shock people who think Rush, much like the Yorkie candy bar, is not for girls. And three, there’s a picture of a freakin’ dragon with wings wearing a hat made of fruit on the album cover.

TARA LEE WITTCHEN

US MAPLE – Purple On Time (Drag City)

Drag City's weirdest signing (next to Will Oldham they sound downright alien) return after a two-year absence, lost somewhere in random time signatures and Sonic Youth guitar tunings. Call it what you will (is it no-wave influenced downtown-abstract skronk or simply just wank noise?), but expect something unlike anything else.
