ARETHA FRANKLIN
So Damn Happy
Arista
· What the…..?

From disco to new wave, Aretha Franklin has attempted to ride the wave of an ever-changing musical landscape. Since 1998, with her uneven foray into hip-hop with A Rose is Still a Rose, Aretha has yet to convince me that it’s a worthwhile journey.

With her latest project, Aretha delivers a tepid and dull affair that swears allegiance to the slick production of adult contemporary music. There are somewhere in the neighbourhood of 10 producers for this monstrosity, including Janet Jackson collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the illustrious Mary J. Blige and Burt Bacharach. So Damn Happy is burdened by glossy overproduction and plagued by unimaginative arrangements.

Go back to her first gospel albums before you subject yourself to this sadness and forget who is really the undisputed Queen of Soul.
