· Be Young. Have Fun. Listen to MXPX.

I know it’s hypocritical to condemn a band for being derivative when they play a genre of music that is at its best when it rips itself off, but MXPX sure set them selves up. On "Play It Loud," the leadoff track on Before Everything & After, they sing, "Be true to yourself/ and stop trying to be just like somebody else," then they proceed to close the song with a keyboard riff that sounds exactly like The Who. They proceed to steal production techniques from Blink 182, chord progressions from Green Day, bass lines from The Pixies and so on and so on. It’s all catchy good fun, but c’mon – don’t sing an anthem about originality and then cop out so fiercely. Pop hook only gets you so far without integrity.
