ROSIE THOMAS
Only With Laughter Can You Win
Sub Pop
· Are you there God? It's me, Kirsten.

Listening to this album, one has the same guilty feeling you’d get reading your ex-best friend's diary. Only With Laughter Can You Win sounds like bad teenage poetry – you have to ignore the creepy woman-child cover art and embarrassing song titles and give in to the idea of the teenage girl concept record.

Being once a 12-year-old girl myself once (who had a bad perm and wore candy necklaces as actual jewelry), I was this album. Who hasn't been the hi-bye friend to a hyper-emotional super crush or thought about marrying a Tiger Beat cover boy? Mine was Kirk Cameron, but I digress.

Queen of the roller rink, Rosie Thomas captures those self confidence issues and emotional outbursts with her love-sick vocals. The album borders on saccharine, but finds the one thing so shameful about being a teenage girl – loving teenage boys. Only With Laughter is the perfect record to help you get in touch with your inner child. If you're in the mood for a good cry and a tub, this will get you there.
