EMMYLOU HARRIS
Stumble Into Grace
Nonesuch
· More beauty from alt-country’s elder stateswoman.

If you listen to commercial radio or watch the nation’s video booty stations, you may think that all music coming out these days is loud, crude and in your face. Emmylou Harris takes a different approach on Stumble Into Grace, inviting listeners to sit with her under a shady tree and then gently knocking their socks off.

All the songs build upon simple melodies, adding layers of instrumentation and harmony to create pieces that are delicate yet powerful. "Here I Am" and "Jupiter Rising" are subtly groovy, while "Time In Babylon" is a minor-key warning against the excesses of modern society. The centrepiece is "Strong Hand (Just One Miracle)," a shimmering tale of real love that grows and changes over time. All those noisy, horny youngsters would do well to sit at Harris’s well-travelled feet for a while.
