IRON MAIDEN
Dance of Death
EMI
· Metalli-who?

Iron Maiden are so much more than a British heavy metal band. They’re a reference point in the history of rock ’n’ roll, like the Ramones or Motorhead. Like any band with a 25-year history, Iron Maiden have had their ups and downs. Dance of Death, their 13th studio album, continues the brilliant new era they rang in with 2000s Brave New World.

Dance of Death has all the essential Maiden elements: accusatory and damning lyrics, epic storytelling, blistering vocal acrobatics from Bruce Dickinson, searing and precise attacks from bassist Steve Harris and drummer Nicko McBrain, and top-notch fretwork from Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers. The songs are heavy and familiar, sure, but at the same time, they’re pushing the boundaries of what an Iron Maiden song can be. There’s a fantastic tension throughout the album as a result of their experimentation – check out the contrast within songs like "No More Lies" and "Face in the Sand," or the brilliant use of silence before a devastating assault in "Paschendale."

What makes this album special is how the band has become comfortable enough to deliver the goods with exposed hearts. An uncommon approach in a genre that’s all about kicking ass and bashing heads, but in Maiden’s case, it really works.
