Edmonton singer-songwriter Jen Kraatzs pleasant, restrained vocals feel a little like those of former 10,000 Maniacs frontwoman Natalie Merchant. Neither woman is brash enough to become the next Celine Dion or Avril Lavigne, but both make quality music that appeals to those who appreciate subtlety.
Kraatzs second solo album, Ashes, has many such subtle moments. While the first few songs carry a hint of twang, "Here Today" could be a pop-rock hit. There are also quieter passages some dark, like "Off To The Mill," and others, like "Cocoon," featuring a more hymnic quality. The lyrics are simple and personal, speaking of everyday encounters in the world just outside ones door. Kraatz is a solid example of making good music without going over the top.
