| Twenty years ago this week, Triangle Gallery opened its doors and began providing Calgarians a vantage point into visual arts, architecture and design that had previously not existed.
Taking over the unusual and sometimes unwieldy wedge-shaped space next to Calgarys Municipal Building, the Calgary Contemporary Arts Society began to officially operate Triangle Galley on September 15, 1988. The initial excitement of a new gallery attracted more than 3,000 visitors during the first three days of the inaugural exhibition.
What started off as a venue to highlight the citys art collection has matured into a gallery that now offers thought-provoking programming worthy of a much larger centre. Triangle has continued to not only support local and regional artists, but has also bolstered its presence on the international art scene in recent years by featuring works from Sweden, Finland, South Korea and Japan.
Under the stewardship of Jacek Malec, the gallerys director since 1997, Triangle has continued to celebrate artists of note while also making room for innovators.
Throughout its 15-year history, the triangle-shaped gallery has staved off financial ruin by offering the public another perspective on art, design and architecture. Triangle Gallery is the smallest of Calgarys public galleries, yet has established itself as one of Canadas most innovative. |
