When drum and bass was in need of a star to make the movement shine, only a handful of the then-emergent scene would rise to the challenge. Though, not the original innovator, Goldie can still be considered the first legitimate superstar of breakbeats.

With his album Timeless, Goldie finally saw his gold-capped smile grace the covers of uncountable music magazines worldwide. For reasons too numerable to mention, he seized the attention of the pop music world by bringing elements of hip hop’s street-savvy mystique to the hardwood of dance culture. Years later, his influence on today’s breakbeat culture can still be felt.

Although Fast Forward did talk to Goldie his acquisition of a Florida flu bug prevented him from filling in the blanks. In lieu, we’ve asked local DJ, Jonus Jordon, who’ll open for Goldie, to give you a few reasons why people should check out the man with the golden bridgework.

"That’s easy," says Jordan. "First of all, it gives us the chance to participate in the world class calibre of talent that he’ll bring to the local drum ’n’ bass community. Second, it’s a chance to participate with the one of the world’s foremost breakbeat artists for a mere 15 dollars. Third, because he might tag the newly renovated digs of Tequila." (Look for the infamous Goldie tag that he once used in the early ’80s to mark New York’s subway system.)

This marks the first time Goldie has been to Calgary and it’s probably the best way to come to terms with why drum ’n’ bass is the strongest global dance movement at the moment. If you’re bored with the hooch fest of every bar in this city, bored of dancing to shitty Top 40 and you want to try something that’s gonna rock the shit out of you then this is the show to do it. He won’t be anything other than Goldie and that’s reason enough. "We don’t ever get to see this kind of talent in such a small venue in this city and it’ll be the show everyone said they were at," says Jordon.

If the aforementioned reasons weren’t enough, Jordon adds, "(Goldie) sure as shit won’t play any classic rock anthems and it’s finally a club night that isn’t sponsored by a corporation or a local classic rock station. (It) won’t feature anything but some authentic underground dance culture"
